Most of us find it difficult to find right kind of shoes that we are looking for. Before buying boots, we all consider warmth and comfort to be the most judging factors. Here are some tips you should know about walking boots:
- We often stick to the saying “buy the best you can afford.” But never compromise on the price factor while buying boots, because they are the only things you will wear all day long. You get what you pay for. Fit and comfort are really important, no matter how much it is going to cost you.
- Two- Season boots are best for general country walking in the season of summer and autumn. They have light weight and are very flexible. If a shop owner from whom you are buying, does not know what does two-season boots mean. Drop the idea of purchasing from him.
- You can wear three-season boots throughout the year for country and high fell walking. They are also suited for mountain wearing during late spring.
- Leather boots have become the real choice of hikers and are more durable than boots made by using fabric. But they are heavier. Most of the fabric boots are made by Cordura nylon and have leather patches at some points. Most of the boots these days are lined with a waterproof membrane of Gore-Tex or other material.
- Always wear a pair of lining socks, which are thin and made of soft cotton or cotton/ wool mix. They cushion the feet and protect it from getting blisters. Do not forget to wear these linings with your boots.
- Your boot should be wide enough so that you don’t find it tight around the base of the toes.
- Be sure that your toes do not press into the front of the boot, the moment you put the foot forward. To prevent this, the boot should be laced correctly.
- You must check the flexibility of sole of a boot before buying it. If it is not so flexible, it will not accommodate some bending to the foot while walking. Hard soles do not give enough support to your foot, making it difficult for you to walk properly.
- You should clean your boots after a walk. Little care for your leather boots can result in giving you years of use. Clean leather boots properly especially when you walk in the area containing peat. After washing them, let them dry naturally and apply special walking boot conditioner (not a shoe polish). You can also stuff the boots with some newspaper before you leave them to dry.
- Fabric boots in comparison to leather boots are easier to care for. Just clean off mud and leave them to dry. These boots can also be treated with water repellant spray. Although, it does not prevent water from entering the boots but extend its life.
