Even the most novice hiker can tackle the hike from canyon rim to valley floor and back up again. Only fit people need not be an athlete can also do the task successfully. There is no chance for mistake, as it is a tough hike.
An experience hiker can trek to the bottom and back up in single day. If you have time than it is suggested to plan you hike for over three days to make the experience more adventurous. In order to get more information about Grand Canyon hiking, you can refer to some books, videos and DVDs available. These will give you a little idea of the trail before you experience it in real.
Most of the hikers follow the idea of beginning the decent from one rim, hiking to the canyon floor and then hike out it in the opposite side.
However, you will find some problems with this kind of hike. Supposedly you start from south rim and end up at north rim, it becomes difficult for you to choose the location to park your car. The distance between both rims can be up to 220 mile. You will find some hikers who are ready to swap their car keys with other group hiking in opposite direction. If you do not prefer this option, then enjoy the ride of shuttle that runs between both the rims.
For crossing the rims, you either choose a Grand Canyon hike or self-guided hike. If you stick to self-guided hike, then you must follow a good map.
When To Hike
June, July and August are scorching hot seasons and hikers should avoid choosing this time for their trip. North rim is closed from mid November to mid May, so you will not even find any facilities at that time. The perfect time to go for a Grand Canyon hike is mid may to early June and late September to mid November.
Which Track?
North Kaibab Trail is the only track from north rim to the Canyon floor. It is a 13 miles spread and the whole trail descends approx 5400 feet. South Kaibab, a 5.6 miles spread and Bright Angel Trail, a 9.7 miles spread are two choices if you are starting from South rim. Both have consecutive heights of 4500 feet and 4260 feet. You will find water in Bright Angel but no water is available in South Kaibab. It is because no-availability of water, South Kaibab is also recommended as descent track.
It is recommended to carry a tent, sleeping bag, cooking equipment, food, drinking water, extra clothes and toiletries, so that you can stay at any campsite. Those looking for little more comfort can stay at well maintain lodge. These are a great option if you are seeking for some place to relax before climbing back to the rim. |
