The Caribbean, often referred to as the most magical group of islands in the world, is largely situated on the Caribbean Plate and is an assimilation of more than 7,000 islands. The Caribbean region is also known as the West Indies, interestingly due to the fact that the man who discovered this great American land, Christopher Columbus, landed here in the year 1492 believing he was in the Indies (Asia). The Caribbean region has a rich history behind it. Since the time of the Atlantic slave trade, the region has had immigrants from Britain, France, Spain, the Netherlands and Denmark settling here. This feature speaks volumes about the rich cultural diversity of the Caribbean region. The Caribbean islands are classified as one of Conservation International's biodiversity havens because they support exceptionally diverse ecosystems, ranging from montane cloud forests to cactus scrublands.
