Located ideally on the Mediterranean island, Malta is known for its illustrious history and archaeological buildings and sites. The island is visited by numerous tourists for its glitzing sunshine, serene sea, and amazing nightlife. But the main attraction of the island is its variety of forts, which offers tourists a peek into its glorious past.
Fort St. Elmo is one of the popular forts of this island. Initially, it was a watchtower but after the invasion, by the Ottoman Empire in 1565, it was reinforced as a working fort. The fort had been a witness to numerous wars and warriors. At present, it act as the police headquarters and war museum of the region.
Another popular fort of this island is the Fort St. Angelo. During the 14th century the fort was the home of the powerful Nava family. Although, till date the fort's actual construction remains a mystery. The fort had experienced its share of bombardment and wars. Currently, its the site of the maritime museum but part of the fort remains leased to The Knights of St. John. Towards the northern part of island, is the Fort St. Agatha, also known as The Red Fort primarily for its distinctive color combinations. The fort was built under the supervision of Grand Master Lascaris and acted as the shield from the Ottoman and Corsairs Empire. Once the fort was completely built, it was used as a watchtower for knights and storehouse for artillery. The fort is open till today.
Malta island also consists of various other forts, telling stories of its heroic deeds and mysterious past. The island has experienced numerous wars because of its strategic location between Europe and Africa. Throughout the ages, the island had served as the base for supply, trade and military for numerous empires. But, its not only the war, but also the invasion by different colonies that left their mark on this beautiful island.
The island remains a favorite destination especially, among travelers with interest in art & culture. Island's landscape is another factor which adds on its mysterious outlook. |
