One of the most convenient methods to make full use of your vacation is to hire a car and explore the whole country according to your convenience. First go through these guidelines that should be applied when it comes to hiring a car in the UK: - You need a driving license, ID proof and a credit card.
- You always drive on the left hand side so always remember to give way to traffic from your right when using roundabouts.
- Speed limit:
- Motorway: 112m/h (70mph), within city limits 48km/h (30mph).
- The speed limits on major roads: 65km/h (40mph), 80km/h (50mph) or 96km/h (60mph)
- Speed cameras are installed on all major roads and on some motorways also.
- There is a variable speed limit on the M25.
- All the petrol stations located in UK sell premium, unleaded petrol (super and 95) and diesel. Many stations offer self-service machines that can accept payments by your valid credit card as well. Some stations have 24-hour service as well.
- Parking rules are a little strict, as you cannot park your cars on double yellow lines. Single yellow lines have their own kinds of rules that differ depending on the area. Parking is permitted usually after 6.30pm.
- Be careful that you don't drive in the bus lanes. The fine can go up to £80 - £100 depending upon the situation. All the Buses are equipped with cameras.
- It is strictly prohibited to use a mobile phone until and unless you are using a "hands free" unit.
Always hire a car from a reputed firm. Go through this following checklist - Before you take the car - Check for any kind of dents or scratches that the company haven't informed you about and that there is as much petrol in the tank as is mentioned in the contract.
- Documents – While driving, make sure that you carry your driving license and insurance related documents with you and don't ever leave them behind in the car. You never know when they will get stolen.
- Insurance policy – Tourists are the main targets for thieves because it is very difficult to identify an outsider in a hired car. So always take out the maximum insurance as you can from the company.
- Spare keys - Make sure that you always have an additional set of keys in case of any loss. Most firms charge you extra if you tend to lose a key. So it is better to have an additional key in advance to save your money in case of a theft or loss.
- Many car hiring firms organize partnerships with a number of airlines. It often leads to many discount offers that are in favor of the customer. But even if you are not flying, you can avail advantages of these deals. You just have to surf the websites of those airlines and click on the link that offers “car hire partnerships.” By doing so you can avail the offer but you have to collect the car from the airport itself. But that may end up with you paying almost half of the actual amount. These types of hiring firms tend to be trustworthier as they are linked with world-class airlines.
