Tsavo National Park is the largest park of Kenya and it covers more than 20,800 square kilometers of the entire space. The park is divided into two parts. One is Tsavo East and the second one is Tsavo West that is divided with the help of by the busy Mombasa/Nairobi Road and the railroad. The Tsavo West part of the park has been through a lot of changes that are related to the great elephant herds. It was during the last century when the forest was turned into grasslands, all thanks to the grazing patern of those big elephants! By the year 1960, the number of elephants was increased to an amazing 50,000. But because of the poaching activity, the number was gradually reduced to just 5,000. People are gradually getting aware of this thing and it is due to their awareness, the grasslands are again changing back to new forest and scrub. The fact is that Poaching has always been a major problem in the area. It is due to this problem, a massive decrease is not even seen in the number of elephants, but same is the case with black rhino as well. It has been reduced from about 7,000 in 1969 to less than 100 in the year 1981. But now the activity of poaching has been contained at a major level, all thanks to various conservation efforts from all over the world. The approximate area of Tsavo West that covers almost 9000 square kilometers are equipped with the famous also include the Ngulia Mountains as well as the Ndawe Escarpment. So these mountains add on more charm to the whole traveling experience! Tsavo East National Park is not that famous as compared to the other part and that is why it is far less visited than Tsavo West. The area covers more than 11,000 square kilometers and is geared up with of varied bush, arid flatland and desert. Not much to offer! But recently most of the space of Galana River has been opened to the public. Major of the area of this park is covered by: Oases along the Athi, Tiva, Tsavo and Voi Rivers relieve the dry scrublands. |
